The President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, as Romania’s primary foreign policy decision-maker and representative, in compliance with his constitutional prerogatives, has decided to recognise Mr. Juan Guaidó as Interim President of Venezuela.

The President of Romania has taken this decision after a close analysis of the situation, including from the political, diplomatic and juridical point of view, after most of the European Union Member States and a number of relevant allies and partners of our country from the Euro-Atlantic area have recognised the legitimacy of the Interim President Juan Guaidó.

President Klaus Iohannis considers that, particularly as our country is exercising the Presidency of the European Union Council, and taking into account the increased dynamic of the international evolutions, Romania must deliver a swift, firm and well-founded response regarding foreign policy files, in line with the major priorities it has consistently pursued on a long term.

The Presidential Administration states that it has urgently requested, even since Monday, February 4, immediately after the EU Foreign Ministers informal meeting in Bucharest (Gymnich), elements of assessment regarding this topic and a clear proposal on Romania’s position, including from a political, diplomatic and juridical viewpoint, on the possibility of recognising Juan Guaidó as Interim President of Venezuela, his legitimacy and that of the National Assembly’s actions.

During Friday morning, February 8, the Presidential Administration has received the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ Memorandum, called „Romania’s position with regard to the situation in Venezuela”, approved by the Prime Minister of Romania.

The President of Romania approved immediately the document that, among others, included the proposal to recognise the President of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, as Interim President of Venezuela.
